Rare sighting, Olive Ridley sea turtle in Grenada... rescued, checked, tagged, released!

On Friday March 27th we got a call from Oceans Spirits that an Olive Ridley sea turtle, a rare sighting for Grenada, had been accidentally hooked on a longline boat and had been brought in to make sure it was ok before being released. Thank you to the fishermen for your care and attention and thank you to the Fisheries Department for reaching out to Ocean Spirits that set off the chain of events to keep this full grown female safe and get her checked and tagged before being released successfully back into the sea! It was a definite team effort and we’d like to thank many: top fishermen, Fisheries Department, multiple fish market vendors including Nigel, Oceans Spirits, Dr Carter DVM, our Eco crew and a thank you to our Coyaba guests and Grand Anse guests who gave our Ridley peace and space to rest and release back to the sea uninterrupted.

Grenada is blessed with beautiful biodiversity including many threatened and endangered marine species, even some critically endangered species (e.g. Hawksbill turtle). Olive Ridleys are rarely seen in Grenada which made it an extra privilege to see and assist one back to the wild.
