Hello happy divers. There is a bill being considered in in Hawaii to make the selling of shark fins illegal in that state. They are getting some good press but can use all the help they can find. If you have a minute and love these creatures like we do please have a look. Information taken via the Shark Research Institute (SRI) …

ITEM 1: HAWAII PUBLIC COMMENT SESSION ENDS Monday 8 a.m. Hawaii time.

COMMENTS NEEDED on Proposed ban of Sale of Shark Fins…..

The government of Hawaii has proposed a bill banning the sale of shark fins within their state. It currently has the catchy title of “SB 2169: A bill for an act relating to shark fins”, and you can read it at: http://www.capitol.hawaii.gov/session2010/Bills/SB2169_sd1_.pdf

This bill is progressing much faster than my shark conservation friends working in Hawaii suspected.

The public comment period closes Monday at 8:00 a.m. Hawaii time!

If you have something you’d like to say about this bill, please do it soon.

You are free to write whatever you want, but here are some talking points.
-Sharks are slow growing and have few young, which makes them particularly vulnerable to overfishing.
-Shark finning is a brutal and wasteful fishery in which the fins (less than 5% of the weight of the animal) are removed while the shark is still alive, and the less-valuable rest of the shark is dumped overboard to bleed to death or drown.
-The shark fin itself is made of cartilage and adds no flavor whatsoever to the soup. It only adds texture, and may pose a health hazard because of its high methyl-mercury content.
-Shark finning results in the deaths of as many as 70 million sharks a year, which is unsustainable

“This tour was exceptional because Don & Darrell were very competent, friendly, knowledgeable, and friendly – Don told us about himself and his family, history of Grenada – politics, Hurricane Ivan, the cricket stadium and much much more. Darrell is knowledgeable about plants, herbs & spices – we smelled cinnamon and also saw nutmeg – cocoa beans – both inside & out – identified flowers. Pointed out breadfruit, nutmeg, guava. The hike & waterfalls were exhilarating.
This was an adventure – memorable, challenging, energizing – we learned about Grenada – met some Grenadians as well as fellow participants from around the world – and we were comfortable – Thanks!”

“Bottom line all of us on this dive excursion were extremely impressed by the dive masters, the captain, the boat and the dive sites. In a word the entire experience through EcoDive and the dive sites were OUTSTANDING!

All of the folks on this Princess dive excursion had a great time. You see, all of us on this excursion had been diving together prior to our arrival in Grenada (and afterwards too…in Dominica and St. Thomas) so we developed a comradarie in the five days of diving we did through Princess. Everyone, and I mean everyone, commented that of the five islands we dove Grenada was right at the top…even surpassing Bonaire. The best kept secret is Grenada! What a beautiful island, and the waters are terrific. (People pretty friendly and polite too.) Can’t beat that combination no matter where!” R.M. Dec 09

Safe and Happy Diving to all. Happy Holidays
